One Day (2011)

When it's over, July 15 marked the special day.  The film took place on this date over the span of 20 years, following two college graduates through their ups and downs in life. Emma and Dexter (Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway) vow to be friends after they spend their graduation night together, and as their friendship strengthens, so does their attraction for one another. As they fall in and out of other relationships, their bond remains unbroken. I liked the characters, and I liked the setting, but the love story failed to sweep me off my feet.  Main reason - shifting the tone of the story 3/4 into the film did more harm than good.  At first glance and throughout most of the film, the film's tone leaned towards the romantic comedy genre, and the sudden shift towards tragedy was a poor choice in plot twist.  Sturgess was wonderful, and Hathaway was delightful, and that's the problem.  For tragedies to work, the performances have to have soul and power, and neither performances were dramatic enough to bring out the tragedy.  This was no fault of the actors, but rather the way the story was told and put together. I think if it had stayed on the path of a romantic comedy, it would have worked, and if it wanted to be a tragedy, the film should have gone to greater lengths to plant the seeds that would lead up to the ending.

My rating: 2.5 out of 5
